Coconut Chutney Recipe

Coconut Chutney

Coconut chutney is a type of side dish usually served with Idli/dosa or with most of South Indian snacks. I often make this recipe as it’s my personal favourite and can be ready in no time. I like to add fresh coriander leaves in chutney which not just gives freshness but also adds lovely green colour to the recipe. But if you don’t fancy then can totally skip coriander leaves. Essentially, 5 ingredients are required for this chutney – Coconut, green chilli, roasted chana dal, tamarind and salt. And then few more for tempering to pour on top.

Sometimes, I like to make thin consistency, skip tempering and serve on hot steamed rice. That’s a perfect light meal for any day; sourness from tamarind and slight heat from the chilly combined with milky and nutty flavours of coconut. Pour it on a hot steamed rice along with some papad – a happy happy meal šŸ˜‹

Ingredients:

1 cup grated coconut

1 green chilli (adjust as per heat)

1 small ball of tamarind (without seeds)

1 tbsp roasted chana dal

Small bunch of fresh coriander

Salt as per taste

For Tempering

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp asafoetida
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1-2 dry red chillies (can use round red chillies as well)
  • 8-10 curry leaves

Method:

I have used frozen grated coconut, thawed it and used for the chutney. But if you have access to freshly grated coconut then it always works best in the recipe. Add all ingredients – grated coconut, chilli, tamarind, chana dal, coriander & salt into the blending jar. Ground it into coarse paste or until everything mix together.

You can serve the chutney as it is without tempering. And as I mentioned earlier, this no tempering-chutney version goes well with plain steamed rice.

For tempering, heat a small pan on high heat and add oil into it. Once oil is hot, add mustard seeds in it. When mustard seeds starts crackling, switch off the heat and add remaining ingredients – asafoetida, curry leaves, urad dal and dry red chillies. Carefully, give a gentle stir, just to make sure, everything is mixed together. Pour this hot tempering on the prepared chutney.
