Goan Godache Fov | Sweet Poha (flattened rice) Recipe

Recipe for this blog post is a regional speciality from Goa known as ‘Godache Fov’. Goa has been known for its fish curry and other non vegetarian recipes. But there are tons of vegetarian rather vegan recipes as well. This recipe is one of them – Godache Fov as known in regional Konkani language which translates to a sweet poha.

In our goan household we prepare this version of poha during Diwali on the day of Narak Chaturdashi for breakfast. We start our day by getting up early and get dressed in a traditional outfit then enjoy scrumptious homemade breakfast. This breakfast includes two types of poha – sweet and other regular yellow poha along with Diwali snacks like chakali, karanji, chiwada etc. I have already shared recipe of regular Maharashtrian poha on my blog.

Though this poha recipe prepared specially on Diwali; one can enjoy it on any other day as snack or breakfast. It is quick, simple and requires handful ingredients. I prefer to use brown poha in the recipe but it can be prepared with white ones as well. Just make sure to use medium poha flakes as thin poha turns soggy easily. I keep this dish super simple but one can add tempering of mustard seeds and curry leaves or add slit chilli for mild spicy flavour. So, now let’s check out detailed recipe :-

Ingredients:-

1 cup poha (brown or white)

1/2 cup shredded coconut

1/2 cup powered jaggery

Salt as per taste

How to make:-

Wash poha thoroughly under running water. Soak poha in water for 10-15 minutes. Keep an eye on soaked poha to avoid turning into mushy.

After enough soaking; completely drain off all the water.

Add shredded coconut and jaggery into the poha. Mix it thoroughly and then add salt as per taste.

Mix it well until everything is combined.

Our sweet poha is ready to dig in. Enjoy it with cup of tea or coffee.

You can try some variations to this recipe.

Add tempering of mustard seeds and curry leaves.

Add slit green chillies.

Add some cardamom powder for enhanced flavours and aroma.

I hope you have enjoyed this recipe and would love to give it a try. I have few more Goan recipes on my blog which you might want to try. You can find those recipes here.
