Goa is a small state situated on the western coast of India. And it’s not just famous for its beautiful beaches but also for seafood. Since my family belongs to Goa, growing up I have tasted authentic Goan food prepared by my Mom & Grandma. And one of my favourite homemade delicacy is Prawns Hooman with hot rice๐Ÿ˜‹. Incase you are wondering what is ‘Hooman’ then in Goan native language fish curry is known as ‘Hooman’ and Prawns means ‘Sungata’ while drumsticks = ‘ Sango’. Hence this recipe got its name as ‘ Sungatache sango ghalun Hooman’.

Being coastal state, Goa has abundance of coconut trees. Thus we goans make use of coconut in most of our recipes. And that’s why, other main ingredient of this curry is coconut along with prawns. Usually you’ll find versions this curry, one prepared using just prawns while other along with drumsticks or Okra. In this post, I am going to share recipe of curry along with drumsticks. But if you don’t fancy drumsticks then you can completely skip it and follow rest of the recipe.

This authentic recipe, I have learned from my MIL and we usually serve it with plain white rice and fried fish along with salad on the side. So let’s check our recipe of Prawns curry !!

Below recipe is enough for 4-5 people.

Ingredients:

200 gms of raw prawns

2 or 3 whole drumsticks

1 cup of tightly packed freshly grated coconut

1 small or 1/2 red onion

1 tbsp oil

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

1 tsp coriander powder

1 tsp red chilli powder

1 tsp kashmiri chilli powder

1/2 lime sized tamarind

Salt as per taste

Water for cooking (warm water preferred)

Method:

First thing first – thoroughly wash and clean the prawns, Keep cleaned prawns aside.

Remove outer hard covering of drumsticks using knife or peeler and cut it into small pieces as per choice.

Next start preparing curry paste, for which we’ll need shredded coconut, turmeric, coriander, red chilli & kashmiri chilli powder. Blend everything together along with tamarind into thick paste. Use warm water for grinding and use minimal water.

Next, switch on the pan and add oil, finely chopped onions into it. Stir it quickly and add drumsticks pieces into the pan along with little water. Water is required just to boil drumsticks, hence add it accordingly. Let everything cook on a medium flame. Once drumsticks are cooked, add curry paste into the pan.

Add cleaned prawns into the curry and let everything cook on medium heat. Curry will start bubbling and then it will release its aroma.

Give a final stir, check whether prawns and drumsticks are cooked. Switch off the gas and curry is ready.

Serve it with plain steamed white rice along with some fried fish. This prawns curry even goes well with red rice or bread.
